What to Drink (and Eat) on Wine and Cheese Day

Our favorite day of the year, National Wine and Cheese Day, is coming up quickly! On July 25th, gourmands across the country will celebrate the sublime pairing of two of the world’s most delightful delicacies. Like history’s most iconic duos—think Abbott and Costello, Romeo and Juliet, Mario and Luigi, Sonny and Cher, Batman and Robin—wine and cheese are both wonderful on their own, but when they come together, their mouthwatering, magical union shines even brighter than the sum of their individual parts.

Plan ahead for the flavorful festivities by stocking up now, so you’re ready to go when the big day rolls around. We’ve selected some of our Foley Family favorites for easy ordering, along with our recommended cheese pairings that bring out the best in each tantalizing treat.

Wine: 2020 Lincourt Grüner Veltliner, Sta. Rita Hills
Cheese: Chèvre

Crisp, vibrant, and bursting with zesty notes of citrus and fresh green herbs, Austrian white specialty Grüner Veltliner is at its finest when paired with equally bright, lively cuisine. In Lincourt’s 2020 rendition, from the cool Sta. Rita Hills appellation, a racy, mineral-laced burst of lemon, lime, and grapefruit acidity is a natural match for the tart, tangy flavors of chèvre. This fresh, soft young goat cheese beautifully echoes Grüner’s citrus and herbal notes, adding a subtle earthy edge and a creamy texture to balance the wine’s lean precision.

Wine: 2019 The Four Graces Pinot Gris, Willamette Valley
Cheese: Burrata

Pinot Gris, with its understated, nuanced profile, pairs best with fresh, mild cheeses like Mozzarella or ricotta. To take this combo to the next level, we suggest pairing this elegant Oregon Pinot Gris from The Four Graces with burrata—mozzarella’s softer, cream-filled cousin. The subtle flavors of burrata won’t overpower the wine’s delicate tropical, citrus, and honeysuckle perfume, and its divinely rich, luxurious texture is perfectly offset by the wine’s zingy wet stone acidity.

Wine: 2017 Chalone Vineyard Estate Grenache, Chalone AVA
Cheese: Morbier

Bold and flavorful, never too light or too heavy, with a striking balance of fruity and earthy notes, Grenache is one of the most versatile red wines for pairing. While you could match Chalone’s 2017 Estate Grenache to nearly any cheese, we think its brooding, layered dark fruit, and savory, smoky notes make it ideal to accompany Morbier, a mildly pungent French cheese layered with ash. Morbier’s semi-soft texture complements Grenache’s silky tannins, while its fruity, nutty taste harmonizes with the complex flavors in the wine.

Wine: 2018 Sebastiani Barbera, Sonoma Valley
Cheese: Taleggio

What grows together goes together, it is often said, and while this Sebastiani Barbera is grown in California’s Sonoma Valley, the grape variety has deep roots in the Northern Italian region of Piedmont. In the neighboring Lombardy province, Taleggio, a semi-soft, washed-rind cheese, has everything you’d want in a companion to Sebastiani’s soft, juicy, and rustic red. The irresistibly smooth, spreadable cheese matches Barbera’s velvet mouthfeel. Meanwhile, it unleashes an earthy, mushroomy flavor that doesn’t overwhelm with funk, playing off the wine’s smoky cedar, savory licorice, and warm baking spice notes to highlight its mouthwatering wild cherry and raspberry fruit.

Cheese: Long-Aged Gouda

With an intense, concentrated wine like Syrah, you’ll want to go bold with your cheese—think heavily aged hard cheeses or divinely pungent blues. Three Rivers’ 2018 Pepper Bridge Vineyard Syrah has the structure and complexity to match with any intense cheese, but our top pick has to be long-aged Gouda. The cheese’s nutty, earthy, and buttery umami character works wonderfully alongside the Syrah’s rustic smoke, leather, and pepper notes, while the firm textures and crunchy, grainy amino acid crystals—a key sign of a well-aged cheese—harmonize delightfully with the wine’s mouth-filling concentration and sturdy tannic frame.
