Vinetalk with Dave Lattin
Kuleto Estate and Merus Winemaker
Harvest has finally arrived and FFWS took a trip out to Kuleto Estate to catch up with Winemaker Dave Lattin and to see the crew in action as they begun harvesting for the 2014 vintage.
The first official day of harvest was on August 15th, marking it the earliest harvest to date at Kuleto Estate. The crew began by picking clone 548 Chardonnay, and has since moved on to small lots of Pinot Noir and Malbec. For the later-ripening varieties such as Zinfandel, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, Dave typically ventures out into the vines to taste test the fruit and will then conduct a juice panel analysis to determine whether or not the grapes are ready to be harvested.
Weather conditions thus far have been very agreeable with cool, overcast mornings, which are ideal for picking grapes, and Dave expects to begin harvesting Cabernet Sauvignon by the end of the first week of September.

Loaded with aromas of sweet dessert spices, liqueur-soaked cherries, and dried rosemary. True to form, the mouthfeel is incredibly soft and low-lying. It is warming, creamy, and absolutely delicious.
Merus - Featured
From the same fruit sources as the Merus bottling, the Altus comes from select barrels that showcase fruit and pure varietal character and a tannin profile more feminine than masculine within the context of the vintage.
