Foley Sonoma Winery, California
Courtney Foley, the youngest daughter of Proprietor Bill and Carol Foley, was born in Phoenix, Arizona, into a wine-loving family. At a young age, her family moved to Santa Barbara, California, where she grew up spending much of her time enjoying the outdoors and the beautiful Mediterranean climate. She spent much of her time on the beach skimboarding, in the hills backpacking, or hiking around vineyards with her dogs. Food and wine have always been a big part of Courtney’s life. It was when she was just 12
years old that her dad founded Foley Estates, quickly followed by Lincourt Vineyards, a tribute to both her and her older sister, Lindsay. With her uncle as the vineyard manager for both properties, and her grandparents living at Foley Estates, Courtney developed a lasting connection with the vineyards and wineries, and both remain among her favorite places.
When it came time to choose a college, Courtney decided on Whitman, located in beautiful Walla Walla, Washington – an up-and-coming wine region. Expounding on her love of the outdoors, Courtney spent her time at Whitman studying Environmental History and Geology, and went on to study Enviromental Law at the University of Oregon. Realizing the life of an attorney was not for her, Courtney left the Pacific Northwest to sell wine in Southern California, working with grocery stores, restaurants and resorts. It was not until she started interacting with more winemakers that she realized that a career in wine production was the best fit for her. “I have always enjoyed the outdoors and natural sciences,” Courtney said, “but I am especially compelled by the artistry involved in winemaking, and the unique ability to express a particular location that is intrinsic to the job.”
After studying Enology at Fresno State, Courtney worked with Leslie Renaud at Foley Estates and Lincourt, and eventually moved up to Sonoma County where she worked with Mark Lyon at Sebastiani Vineyards. For the opportunity to head up winemaking at Foley Sonoma, Courtney is excited. “This is a truly beautiful facility, and I am absolutely thrilled to be working with Alexander Valley fruit.” Courtney especially enjoys early mornings at Foley Sonoma, when the fog has not burned off and can be seen floating through the vineyards.
When she is not making wine, Courtney enjoys live music, hiking, dancing, Karaoke, and exploring Northern California. In addition, she loves to road trip with her two dogs, Fritz and Penny, while listening to Podcasts and alternative rock. Her dream trip is to travel to Nepal, but closer to home, she loves to visit Oregon to cheer on the U of O Ducks and taste wine in the Willamette Valley.
