VineTalk: Vineyard Updates from Dave
Originally from Corvallis, Oregon, Dave received his bachelor degree in Microbiology from Oregon State University in 1981. Although his wine career started with Acacia Winery, Dave soon traveled to Europe where he developed a profound appreciation for German and French wines. From the vineyards of St. Emilion to the cellar at Troplong-Mondot, Dave worked and studied the art and craft of fine winemaking before returning to the US.
Experience: In 1986 Dave received his masters degree in enology from the University of California, Davis. After university he was hired as enologist at Robert Pecota, where he further refined his technical and artistic capabilities before taking a hands-on position as cellar master at Storybook Mountain. In late 1987, Dave rejoined Acacia as enologist where he quickly made himself indispensable. Passionate and committed, Dave was promoted to winemaker in 1992, then to general manager/winemaker in 1997.
Current Assignments: In 2002, Dave met with Pat Kuleto at Villa Cucina on the Kuleto Estate property. "I came to talk about doing some consulting work," says Dave. "Pat was looking for someone who loved to be in the vineyard. We ended up sitting on his porch, drinking wine and eating olives and cheese for five or six hours. We talked about the land and winemaking, we talked about what was important to us; about quality of life and feeling connected."
He then stayed through the acquisition to Foley Family Wines and was then given the opportunity to be the head winemaker for Merus and Altvs in early 2013. When asked about his new role he stated: "With Merus, I'll be dealing with the five traditional Bordeaux varieties, sourced from five different growers and grown in 9 vineyard sites at the southern end of the Napa Valley. It's a slightly different thing to coordinate farming and harvest logistics with contracted growers versus an in-house vineyard crew, but these farmers are all pros, and I hope to learn from them as I have over the years with the crew at Kuleto."
Winemaker’s Quote: For Pat (Kuleto), wine doesn’t exist in a vacuum, it is part of a rich, abundant lifestyle. "Who wouldn’t want to create wine in an environment like that?" An instinctive winemaker with an extensive technical background, Dave strives to create warm, open and opulent food wines that suggest the gracious personality of Kuleto Estate. With respect to Altvs and Merus, Lattin says, "I know that it isn't too late to teach this old dog some new tricks. I'm excited to be working with these new vineyards and learning what it is that they have to say in terms of expression of flavor."

Kuleto - Featured
Loaded with aromas of sweet dessert spices, liqueur-soaked cherries, and dried rosemary. True to form, the mouthfeel is incredibly soft and low-lying. It is warming, creamy, and absolutely delicious.
Merus - Featured
From the same fruit sources as the Merus bottling, the Altus comes from select barrels that showcase fruit and pure varietal character and a tannin profile more feminine than masculine within the context of the vintage.
