Production Notes
2010 provided us with a fairly wet winter with average rainfall. Although the winter was cool and wet, May through September had little to no rain but cooler temperatures throughout the summer months. These weather patterns led to moderate vine vigor and average fruit yield on the vines. Heat spikes began later than normal, mid-August to late September, but allowed for the development of concentrated flavors and an extended hang time. This wine comes from Firestone’s Vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley. Our vineyards sit at 1,000 feet in elevation. While we have vines that date back to the original plantings from 40 years ago, recently we have begun a replanting of our estate vineyards. These plantings utilize the most recent advances in viticulture regarding clone selection, row orientation, and rootstocks. The winemaker selected individual barrels from special lots to create this unique blend. After assembling, the wine was allowed to age for an additional six months in barrel before bottling, allowing the flavors to marry properly.
