A wine that makes you smile. Red and black cherries, sundried cranberries, and sweet hay come to mind in the aroma with a grippy, layered, succulent mouth.

Winemaker Notes
Sangiovese is a wine that always makes me smile. All things warm and sunny come to mind, particularly when made in a vintage like 2012. Red and black cherries, sundried cranberries, and sweet hay come to mind in the aroma. These are followed by aromas of freshly shelled walnuts and milk chocolate. The mouth of Sangiovese is what really sets this varietal apart from others.
Food Pairing Notes
It is grippy, layered, succulent, and so stimulating to the palate that you can’t wait to tuck into a plate of pasta with Bolognese sauce or perhaps braised short ribs on creamy polenta. The Italians understand that wine is food and belongs on the table to make food taste better and make the evening more social. Sangiovese fills this role perhaps better than any other Italian varietal. "Paired with Portabella & Kale Lasagna Roll–Ups with Heirloom Tomato Purée “This Sangiovese is a near classic version of a traditional varietal that takes us back to Tuscany. With notes of black cherries, tar and rose petals peppered with cocoa and dusty tannins, it pairs well with Portabella & Kale Lasagna Roll–Ups with Heirloom Tomato Purée. The combination of dried herbs, spice and red fruits is smashing with the organic layers adding a twist on a timeless Italian dish!” – Robert Smith, Master Sommelier

Production Notes
Vintage 2012 was considered ‘perfect’ by the prognosticators as soon as the last grapes were making their way to the wineries. It was perfect in the sense that quality and quantity benefited both grower and winemaker. The weather cooperated throughout all critical parts of the growing season to produce beautifully ripe and flavorful fruit. Of the twenty-five original acres of Sangiovese grapes at Kuleto Estate, what now remain are the three best blocks that we feel produce the most complex and true Sangiovese wine. Three clones are represented in these blocks and each brings a unique character to the blend. The Deloreto selection is perhaps the most unusual with its saturated bright red color, floral notes, and tremendous acidity. The Trentadue and Shafer selections contribute mouth-filling tannin and deeper, darker aromas and flavors. In 2012, we co-fermented a portion of the Sangiovese with Malbec to brighten the acidity and aromatics in this warm, even-ripening vintage.
