Generous and hedonistic with powerful aromatics of blueberry, blackberry, coriander, violet, dried thyme, and roasted espresso. Flavors of blueberries, cherries, vanilla, and dark chocolate. Truly a delicious and balanced wine.

Of all the Bordeaux varieties, Malbec is surely the most generous and hedonistic. This 2013 proves the point with its powerful aromatics of blueberry, blackberry, coriander, violet, dried thyme, and roasted espresso. The palate is filled with flavors of blueberries, cherries, vanilla, and dark chocolate. Truly a delicious and balanced wine.
Ratings
96 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Enthusiast. "The 2013 Malbec (a blend of 92% Malbec and 8% Merlot) is another small cuvée, at 300 cases. The color almost looks like the Syrah – opaque bluish/black to the rim. Spectacular blueberry, chocolate and mocha notes intermixed with a touch of oak, a full-bodied, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, and spectacular finish characterize this fabulous Malbec that might well be the finest Malbec I’ve had the pleasure of tasting in Northern California. Argentina better be careful if this is something that can be replicated on a wider scale. A killer wine, this is well worth going out of the way to latch onto a few bottles. Drink it over the next 25-30 years."
Winemaker Notes
Malbec is the shining star of Chalk Hill’s Bordeaux red varieties, so I wanted to showcase its unique qualities by bottling the very best of our Malbec on its own. (Well, almost on its own, we blended 8% Merlot into the Malbec to help round out the palate and add an extra layer of texture to the wine). This Malbec came from one discrete block of our Estate West Vineyard. The vines were planted in 2005 on a West facing bench of well-drained volcanic soil known as Red Hill. We’ve found that the wines made from this vineyard block are exceptionally dark, concentrated and typically have aromatic characteristics of fresh wild flowers, blueberries, and juicy blackberries, along with herbal hints of ground coriander and thyme. There is also a degree of classy new French oak barrels that help to refine the palate and impart flavors of vanilla and espresso. Malbec is uncommon in California, but I believe this wine can compete with the very best in the world. This Malbec will age beautifully over the next 6-8 years.
Food Pairing Notes
The big and bold tannins make this a perfect pairing with a roasted pork loin.

Production Notes
We are pleased to present our 2013 Malbec! This wine came from three blocks at our 56-acre Estate West vineyard located on a contiguous piece of property just across Chalk Hill Road from the winery. These west-facing sites feature clay, rock and loam soils that are perfect for Malbec. There is also 8% of Merlot coming from the Block C of Chalk Hill Estate that is clone 181; this is added to help give the wine a harmonious balance.
