Sweet black licorice, warm red apple skins, and melted caramel (think a candy apple) dominate the nose and mouth. Resembles the riper, more powerful and age worthy wines of Brunello.

Winemaker Notes
Our 2013 Sangiovese conjures up the warmest days up here on the mountain. Sweet black licorice, warm red apple skins, and melted caramel (think a candy apple) dominate the nose and mouth. Some years this wine leans more toward the fresh red fruits of a Rosso di Montalcino or a high-end Chianti, and other years it resembles the riper, more powerful and age worthy wines of Brunello. This year, it’s definitely the latter.

Production Notes
Like vintage 2012, vintage 2013 was ‘perfect’ by nearly all grape-growing standards in that yields were slightly above average, the weather was evenly warm, and fruit moved toward ideal ripeness without the fits and starts of the preceding two vintages. Of the twenty-five original acres of Sangiovese grapes at Kuleto Estate, what now remain are the three best blocks that we feel produce the most complex and true Sangiovese wine. Three clones are represented in these blocks and each brings a unique character to the blend. The Deloreto selection is perhaps the most unusual with its saturated bright red color, floral notes, and tremendous acidity. The Trentadue and Shafer selections contribute mouth-filling tannin and deeper, darker aromas and flavors.
Vineyard Notes
For winemaker John Clews, there is a mutual understanding that all but a small percentage of the winemaker’s work is done in the vineyard. Keeping the vineyard’s serpentine twists and exposures in mind, the best-suited varietals for each block have been selected. Working with the land, not against it, the individually terraced lots are not oriented to one central direction, but instead are planted to maximize the benefits of their natural location.
