Winemaker Notes
This 2014 Gravel Bed Cabernet Sauvignon is a rich wine with a black ruby red color. Cherry liquor, tobacco leaf and wet stone minerality dominate the nose. The mouth is filled with fruit forward blackberry flavors that unfold into cherry, herbs, dried leaves and a hint of mocha. Ripe tannins and oak linger on the finish to round out the palate. Although great to drink now with 30 minutes to 1 hour of decanting, it will be best 2 to 4 years from now. - David Nakaji, Winemaker

Production Notes
Sebastiani made its first Alexander Valley Cabernet in 1999. It was the first Sebastiani wine to be on the cover of Wine Spectator and has been a real hit since. This wine is a terroir driven Cabernet from gravelly, alluvial soils; very much like the gravel beds found from Pauillac in Bordeaux. Hence, the best Cabernet (Block #16) came from the Lyon Vineyard, with lots of gravel, grown on a Bordeaux Clone (#337). Our goal with this wine is to showcase not only the best, but our most terroir driven Cabernet. After harvest, we cold soaked a number of the lots to maximize color and flavor extraction. All of the grapes were fermented warm and the light press portion was also incorporated and added more tannin and richness. The wine was aged in French oak barrels with 60% New Saury and Treuil and the remainder in one-year-old French oak barrels. After 18 months of aging, it was then bottled in June 2016.
Vineyard Notes
2014 was a long, mild vintage in the Alexander Valley. Bud break began in late March with fruit set in early May. Warm, dry summer months with no extreme heat spikes set the stage for a long growing season. We harvested the grapes September 14th – October 18th, 2014.
