Winemaker Notes
Our 2014 Old Vine Cabernet Sauvignon is a stunning example of a Sonoma Valley wine. It is dark ruby in color and boasts fragrant aromas of dark berries, ripe red fruits, and tobacco leaf. It is both ripe and restrained on the palate with concentrated fruit-forward flavors of black cherry and wild berry that meld wonderfully together with mineral notes of pencil-lead, cigar box and black tea leaves. Its soft tannins dance pleasantly on the mouth balanced by a nice acidity. The finish is very long with blackberry, dried herbs, and cherry cola.

Production Notes
2014 was our second drought year throughout winter and spring. We had bud break in late-March and good fruit set in early May. Summer was consistently warm, but in our eyes not too extreme. The warm weather lasted until early fall making for an unseasonably early harvest and presenting a more fruit forward vintage. The grapes were harvested under the clear night skies from October 14th to October 24th at optimum ripeness. The fruit was cold-soaked after harvest to build richness and flavor. All the grapes were fermented warm and had little press wine added back to avoid any green, astringent flavors. All lots were racked off the lees and put into French oak barrels (70% new) for 14 months of aging. A careful assemblage was carried out the following spring to seamlessly marry the two lots with 5% Merlot and 1% Malbec to add a nice balance. The wine was bottled in June 2016.
Vineyard Notes
94% of the Cabernet Sauvignon came from the Cherryblock Vineyard planted by the late August Sebastiani in 1961. 6% of the Cabernet Sauvignon came from the Lyon Vineyard located along the Russian River in northern Alexander Valley which was planted in 1973. Both blocks were planted on the traditional St. George rootstock, favored by California vintners from the late 1880s through the 1970s. It withstood California’s first and second waves of phylloxera and today is the rootstock found in most of the state’s oldest plantings.
