Lancaster Estate’s List of Acclaimed Wines Keeps Growing

Located along the rolling hillsides of Alexander Valley, Lancaster Estate’s 54-acres of vineyards have proven time and time again that they’re capable of producing fruit that results in incredible wines.

The valley is emerging as a leading location for producing Bordeaux style Cabernet-based blends to rival the finest from the Napa Valley. Lancaster specifically is dedicated to growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Petite Verdot, and Cabernet Franc with the explicit intention of producing the most authentic expression possible.

With a skilled winemaking team led by winemaker David Drake, Lancaster Estate has earned a reputation for producing high-quality, rich wines – and both wine lovers and industry critics alike are taking notice.

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley was awarded one of the highest honors in the world of wine as it was named one of the Top 100 Wines of 2017 by Wine Spectator. The publication’s reviewer described it as “a big, rich Cabernet with firm, structured tannins that are powerful and edgy, framing the core of blackberry, black cherry, plum, and espresso flavors. An impressive effort.”

Since then, the acclaims have been steadily been rolling in; Wine Advocate delivered 93+ points to the 2015 vintage of the Cabernet Sauvignon and an impressive 95 points to the 2015 Sophia’s Hillside Cuvée.

Most recently, the 2016 Lancaster Estate Winemaker’s Cuvée, Alexander Valley has been the latest wine to turn heads. Lisa Perrotti-Brown of Wine Advocate gave it 94 points with the following tasting notes:

“The 2016 Winemaker’s Cuvée is medium to deep garnet-purple in color and scented of cassis, blackberries and preserved plums with suggestions of cedar chest, wood smoke, dried herbs and tapenade plus a waft of charcoal. Full-bodied with tons of black fruit and wood-inspired flavors, it has a solid line of ripe tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long.”

The 2016 Winemaker’s Cuvée is composed of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the northern tip of the Alexander Valley AVA, east of the Russian River. The combination of this warm climate and its alluvial and gravelly loam soil is ideal for creating balanced wines of complexity, concentration, and richness – which is exactly what you get with this wine.  Black cherry, blueberry, and plum are the gateway to a multi-layered palate of dark fruits, vanilla, black currant, and the ideal tannin-acid structure.

No matter which wine you decide to choose, one this is for certain: drinking a bottle of Lancaster Estate’s bold reds is an experience you won’t soon forget.

5 New & Improved Game-Day Recipes

Be the MVP of any game-day party with one of these great recipes that provide a sophisticated twist on some classic finger food favorites. We know that football is usually synonymous with beer, but we’re wine people – and these bites each have great vino pairings that are sure to score with your tastebuds.

STICKY MISO CHICKEN WINGS

Skip the traditional buffalo sauce an opt for these Sticky Miso Chicken Wings. A tasty glaze consisting of miso, ginger, and fish sauce provides a perfect sweet-sour flavor that pairs seamlessly with a light-bodied Pinot like the 2015 Lincourt Willie Mae Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills. (via Food & Wine)

MANGO MADNESS GUACAMOLE

This is no ordinary guacamole! Grab some fresh mangos and get ready for a flavorful upgrade to the (already awesome) original. We recommend having a glass of Sauvignon Blanc in hand, as it helps cut the fat in the avocado but complements the mango’s flavors – the 2017 Chalk Hill Estate Sauvignon Blanc, Chalk Hill AVA is one of our favorites. (via Get Inspired Everyday

WAFFLE IRON “FRIED” CHEESE

We already know that cheese and wine is a winning combo — and when it’s breaded and melty, it only gets better. Impress your guests by taking this innovative twist on the mozzarella stick by using a waffle iron to “fry” the cheese, resulting in golden-brown, crunchy-yet-gooey deliciousness. (via Serious Eats)

MARGHERITA PIZZA

We know that pizza is usually chosen as a go-to party staple because it’s easy (and delivered pre-made by someone else), but hear us out: this homemade margherita pizza is better than the greasy version that comes in a cardboard box and is super simple to make. Serve it up with a bottle of 2015 Foley Sonoma OZ Zinfandel, Alexander Valley and get ready to do your touchdown dance.  (via A Beautiful Plate)

PULL-APART CHEESEBURGER SLIDERS

It’s not necessarily grilling weather across the United States, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying this tailgate staple. These pull-apart cheeseburger sliders are great for feeding a group of hungry football fans and are totally customizable. We recommend providing gourmet garnishes such as caramelized onions, grilled pineapple, sriracha mayo…and a bottle of acclaimed 2015 Sebastiani Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley. (via Delish)

Our Favorite Wine & Cheese Pairings

National Cheese Lover’s Day is January 20th, giving us an excuse to indulge in one of our favorite foods – and pair it with wine, of course.

Wine and cheese are a match made in heaven, with endless pairing possibilities. Here are some of our favorites:

FRESH GOAT CHEESE & SAUVIGNON BLANC

This pairing is a classic and never disappoints. The raw acidity of good fresh goat cheese and a crisp Sauvignon Blanc (like this bottle from Foley Johnson) is a perfect match to enjoy with fresh bread or crackers.

SWISS-STYLE CHEESE & CHARDONNAY

Whether it’s Jarlsberg, Emmenthaler, Appenzeller, Gruyere, or Comte — these cheeses have less acid, more elastic texture, and a little bite.  No matter which you choose, any of these would work great with Chalk Hill Chardonnay.  The richness and roundness of the wine pick up the bite of the cheese.

AGED GOUDA & CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Cabernet Sauvignon can be difficult to pair with cheeses, because a lot depends on the age and style of the wine.  We recommend trying an aged gouda with one of our favorites, a Lancaster Cabernet. Both wine and cheese are rich with moderate acidity, and the aging of the gouda adds a creaminess and texture that matches the riches of the wine.

MEDIUM-SHARP WHITE CHEDDAR & ZINFANDEL

Zinfandel is a very cheese-friendly wine, so have fun with it! We love it with Dry Sonoma Jack, a medium-sharp white cheddar, or asiago. While any Zinfandel will do, the Kuleto Estate Zinfandel features a plush mid-palate and lower acidity that falls in a great spot for matching cheese.

What to Taste This Weekend

Spending some time in the tasting room this weekend? The long list of wines available to sample can be daunting, and you certainly don’t want to miss the best the winery has to offer.

Our solve? We’re sharing with you two recommendations from each property – one Critics’ Pick that you’re probably already aware of (but is totally worth the hype), and another lesser-known offering that has somehow slipped under the radar; we’re dubbing it a Sleeper Pick.

Did we miss a wine you love? Tweet us your suggestions at @FFWSociety

LANCASTER ESTATE | 15001 CHALK HILL RD, HEALDSBURG, CA

Critics’ Pick: 2015 Lancaster Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley (93+pts, Wine Advocate)

“Medium to deep garnet-purple, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate reveals notes of warm blackcurrants, black cherry compote and blueberry preserves with touches of cedar, mocha, new leather and sandalwood plus a waft of bay leaves. Full-bodied and giving a taut frame of chewy tannins, it has loads of muscular fruit and a long cedar-laced finish.” – Wine Advocate

Sleeper Pick: 2016 Lancaster Estate Winemaker’s Cuvée, Alexander Valley (94 points, Wine Advocate)

You might be thinking: how does a 94-point wine qualify as a “sleeper” pick? Despite its accolades, Lancaster’s 2016 Winemaker’s Cuvée is not as well-known as some of their other varietals – this Cabernet/Merlot blend was built specifically for high-end restaurants, but the tasting room was allocated about 100 cases for special tastings. They’ll be pouring it for a very limited time, so run – don’t walk – to try this super-friendly, elegant wine that tends to appeal to all red wine drinkers.

THE FOUR GRACES | 9605 NE FOX FARM RD, DUNDEE, OR

Critics’ Pick: 2017 The Four Graces Chardonnay, Willamette Valley

In its inaugural release of their 2017 Willamette Valley Chardonnay, The Four Graces is already turning heads. In a region more commonly known for its world-class Pinot Noir, the Chardonnay is impressive with beautiful, bright aromas of fresh pear, lemon zest and coconut. The palate has a lively entry full of citrus notes that transition into a creamy mid palate. The finish is soft with a lingering minerality.

Sleeper Pick: 2014 The Four Graces Foley Family Estate Pinot Noir

A good indication of a great wine is seeing what the winery staff is loving. Currently, the favorite of the tasting room manager is the 2014 Foley Family Estate Pinot Noir. It’s a very Burgundian-style Pinot Noir and is made from the eight best barrels from the Foley Family vineyard from 2014. You’ll have to visit The Four Graces to try this one – it’s not available for purchase online.

LINCOURT VINEYARDS | 1711 ALAMO PINTADO RD, SOLVANG, CA

Critics’ Pick: 2015 Lincourt Cabernet Sauvignon, Santa Ynez Valley

Lincourt’s 2015 Santa Ynez Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a beautifully understated wine with depth and nuance. Elegant aromas of dark plum and blackberry transform on the palate. Flavors of black olive, charred oak and dried cassis evolve into pomegranate and graphite on the mouth. The flavors are further enhanced by smooth tannins on the lingering finish. Next time you’re prepping a peppered skirt steak, consider picking up a bottle – this wine’s medium body and juicy mouthfeel make it a perfect pairing.

Sleeper Pick: 2016 Lincourt Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, Santa Ynez Valley

This 2016 Sauvignon Blanc begins with tropical aromatics of guava nectar and lemon fruit. The palate is fresh and bright with kiwi, nectarine and white peach flavors. The lush mouthfeel is nicely wrapped up by a crisp acidity, making it a great option for pairing with oysters on the half shell. And a huge bonus – Lincourt is currently offering 30% off all on-site purchases of the Sauvignon Blanc! Be sure to call them at 805-688-8554 for details.

The Oregon Wine Brand That Should Be On Your Radar

“I can’t help but conclude that Oregon is right now the single most exciting winemaking area in the United States.” – Eric Asimov, New York Times

Move over, California – Oregon is here and ready to make its mark on the winemaking industry. Hosting more than 700 wineries and more than 1,000 vineyards, over 72 grape varieties take advantage of the unique location and micro-climates the state offers resulting in world-class wines and full varietal character.

Acrobat, based out of Eugene, is one of the brands catching the attention of wine enthusiasts and industry professionals alike. Their wines are sourced from a spectrum of Oregon vineyards, spanning the three classic Western AVA’s – Willamette Valley, Umpqua Valley and Rogue Valley;  each vineyard and AVA have distinct characteristics and provide their own flavor. This diverse geographical selection was done by design, giving Acrobat wines a balanced flavor profile of the state of Oregon.

This strategy has paid off, as Acrobat closes out a stellar 2018 after having five wines earn acclaim from the industry’s leading publications. For a true representation of Acrobat’s commitment to handcrafted “casual, confident, and honest” wines, be sure to pick up one of these recognized bottles at your local retailer or in our online wine shop.

2015 ACROBAT PINOT NOIR, OREGON

2016 ACROBAT PINOT GRIS, OREGON

90 points and Best Buy, Wine Enthusiast | This wine knocks the flavors out of the park again this vintage, with spicy grapefruit and pine needle notes leading the charge. 2016 ACROBAT CHARDONNAY, OREGON

90 points, Wine Enthusiast | “The second vintage of this variety for the popular Acrobat brand, this is a fine value: ripe and fruity, with a pleasing mix of citrus and tree fruit flavors. There’s a gentle touch of fruit skin bitterness, balanced acidity and a light, butter-inflected finish.”

2017 ACROBAT PINOT GRIS, OREGON

90 points and Best Buy, Wine Enthusiast | “A change of owners (from King Estate to Foley Family) has not changed the success or style of this high-volume wine. 2014 Foley Johnson Meritage, Rutherford | Wine Spectator, 92 points

“Top 100 of 2018; Bordeaux-like, offering an expansive mix of currant, cedar, cigar box, riverbed and tobacco leaf flavors. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2020-2032.”

2016 Sebastiani Gravel Bed Red, Sonoma County | Wine & Spirits, 91 points

“This is a brisk cabernet sauvignon (79 percent) blended with merlot and malbec. Its cool tannins carry a dark, resinous herb character, providing a zesty counterpoint to the lush fruit sweetness. The texture is full and mellow, enlivened by fresh mineral acidity that provides a sandstone-like abrasion to the finish. Pour it with pork rillettes or other charcuterie.”

5 Wines to Look Out For

The art of winemaking is one that involves patience. From the months of meticulously caring for the fruit while its on the vine, to the years in the barrel dedicated to the aging process and time spent in the bottle after that –  it seems that every step to getting to the final product is a waiting game. But, you know what they say: the best things in life are worth waiting for.

As the anticipation builds up, staff at Foley Family wineries across the coast are giving you a sneak peek into some of the new releases that are in the works – including the ones they’re most looking forward to.

2016 THREE RIVERS TRIVULET

Three Rivers Winery | Walla Walla, WA

With 2016 being such a great vintage for the property, the winemakers at Three Rivers wanted to find a new way to show it off – and do so with their “Old World” blend named Trivulet. This first release was inspired by the great old world wines of the right bank and is a Cabernet Franc & Merlot blend – two noble varieties that are known for making one of the best combinations in the world. “It’s rich and rustic,” says Three Rivers Assistant Winemaker and General Manager Andy Slusarenko. “I love it with wild mushrooms!” | Available online now.

2015 FIRESTONE VINEYARDS MALBEC

Firestone Vineyard | Los Olivos, CA

When you think of the Santa Ynez Valley, varietals like Chardonnay and Rhône likely come to mind – but Firestone Vineyard is here to break that perception. Their 2015 Malbec, which was introduced in their tasting room for a limited time, has a high level concentration of flavors in a low-yield year. “It’s a great food wine,” shares Linda Van Hook, Group Sales Manager for Foley Family Wines’ Southern California region. | Available now at Firestone; purchase by calling 805-688-3940 or online.

2015 CHALK HILL ESTATE RED

Chalk Hill Estate | Healdsburg, CA

Chalk Hill Estate is known for producing high-quality, award-winning white wines, particularly of the Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc varieties. One of their worst kept secrets, though, is that they also make red wine… and it’s just as good. The 2015 Estate Red has already been recognized with a 94+ point score from Wine Advocate and continues to get praise in the industry. | Available online and in the tasting room now.

2016 MERUS CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Merus  | St. Helena, CA

Merus is one of California’s most exclusive and celebrated producers. A cult Cabernet Sauvignon in every sense of the word, it features fruit from the Coombsville region of south-eastern Napa Valley. Production is so restricted that the winery and tasting salon is open by appointment only and Merus wines are available only by invitations through allocations, complete with a waiting list. Don’t let this scare you, though – the 2016 Cabernet will be worth waiting for. Marc Herman, Estate and Hospitality Manager at Merus, shared that he thinks this vintage is one of the best since 2013. | Released September 2019.

FOLEY SONOMA’S 2016 VINTAGE

Foley Sonoma | Geyserville, CA

We know what you’re thinking: “That’s a broad statement… give us one wine!” Truth is, we can’t narrow it down. 2016 was both current winemaker Chalo Fernandez and former winemaker Courtney Foley’s first harvest at Foley Sonoma, so the 2016 vintage are officially the first Foley Sonoma wines that will be in the market. If we had to pick, though, there are a few that we’re extra excited for. “I feel our Cabernets are going to really put us on the map,” says Foley Sonoma Hospitality Manager Rebekah Nelson. “Look out for the ’16 Winemakers Cabernet, ’16 Courtney Cuvee, ’16 Oz Zinfandel, and ’16 Patty’s Patch.”  | Available online and in the tasting room now.
